Presentation of the National Study Mapping Optimal Locations for Solar and Wind Energy Development in Montenegro

Representatives of the Montenegrin Investment Agency attended the event at which the results of the national study mapping optimal locations for the development of solar and wind energy in Montenegro were presented, developed within the framework of the MEGA project. At the opening of the event, the Acting Director of the Montenegrin Investment Agency welcomed the participants, emphasizing the importance of planned and responsible development of renewable energy sources, as well as the need to align energy projects with spatial protection and the public interest.

The study was prepared using the “smart siting” methodology, which identified locations with high energy potential while minimizing conflicts with natural, social, cultural and other spatial values. The identified potential significantly exceeds the currently installed capacity of all power plants in Montenegro.

As part of the event, a panel discussion was held focusing on the application of the study results within spatial, energy, environmental and other planning documents, with the aim of advancing sustainable energy development.

The national study represents a continuation of the pilot project implemented in the Municipality of Nikšić, as well as the result of a previously signed Memorandum of Cooperation between the Montenegrin Investment Agency, The Nature Conservancy and the non-governmental organization Eko-tim. The Memorandum laid the foundation for joint work on mapping optimal locations for the development of solar and wind power plants at the national level.

The results achieved within the MEGA project represent an important step in Montenegro’s energy transition and in creating a predictable investment environment in the renewable energy sector. The Montenegrin Investment Agency will continue to support investment initiatives based on sustainable planning, transparency and the consideration of environmental, social and economic criteria, contributing to the long-term development of the energy sector and the protection of the public interest.
